You can get mutual fund quotes just like you can for every other company, except there is a catch. The price of a stock is always changing and you can now get real time quotes for free. However the price of a mutual fund does not change until towards the end of the day around 6 or 7 P.M. This is because mutual funds incorporate dozens of different stocks which means it is very difficult to instantly track exactly how the fund is doing.
I do not see this an pro or con to owning a mutual fund. It is nice to know instantly how a particular stock is doing, but not knowing the price of your investment until the end of the day has its advantages as well. You do not have to freak out every thirty minutes about the value of your investments, and you should not. Investing is a marathon, not a sprint. You do not want to make any rash decisions and you should stay away from getting too high or low on your investments. If you stay reasonable, rational, logical, and patient throughout your investing career you will do quite well.
