Stock market holidays

Even the stock market takes a few days off every now and then. The stock market is usually open 9:30-4:00 Monday through Friday but they do take days off.

Here are some notable holidays that the stock market traditionally takes off. It is important to remember that on rare occasions the stock market does halt trading after a castrophe such as 9-11.

New Year’s Day, January 1st

Martin Luther King Jr. Day- Usually around the middle of January.

Presidents day- Around the middle of Feburary

Good Friday

Memorial Day

Independence Day

Thanksgiving day and Christmas.

The stock market also closes early or opens late on other holidays or near holidays.

Holidays do not have a tremendous effect on the stock market. One thing to look out for is around the Christmas season, between Thanksgiving and Christmas stock market volume is low. Meaning not as many shares are going to be traded as usual. This is because people are out of town. This usually does not have a big impact on the price of a stock, but it can be something to consider.
